![]() SPORTFISHING ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS & SURROUNDING AREA’S |
Almaguin highlands, with its hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams, is probably one of the most overlooked areas in Ontario for its quality sport fishing. Over shadowed by the regions of Lake Nipissing and Temagami to the north, along with Ontario’s Kawartha region and Lake Simcoe to the south, the area between the cities of Northbay and Barrie Ontario goes largely untouched by Ontario’s angling fraternity. ![]() A multitude of species inhabit the waters of this region, with many lakes holding opportunities to target up to four, or even five, different species of fish. These include fish such as the Smallmouth and Largemouth bass, Walleye and Pike, as well as opportunities for up to three different species of trout. The Rainbow, Lake and Brook trout. A short drive west to Parry Sound puts you on the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay, where one can sample Lake Huron’s excellent Salmon fishery not to mention the potential of a world class Muskie which also inhabit Huron’s waters. Traveling east will bring you to Ontario’s beautiful Algonquin Park, an angler’s best bet ,this close to Toronto, to sample tangling with wild native Brook Trout with several lakes on Algonquin’s west side offering opportunities for trophy wild Brookies. In between these area’s are numerous small communities surrounded by lakes all offering great fishing. You can still hit lakes in Almaguin , quite possibly being the only angler on the water that day.The small communities and resorts in the area have various family events and activities throughout the year with the largest event in almost all communities being their annual fall fair. Take a weekend and come on up to sample some of the small town culture, or come up to see all of the fall colors. With the warm days and cool nights the sites are second to none. If you or anyone in your family is interested in photography at all, this is a place you need to visit. There truly is something here for everyone. Typically a 6’-6” to 7’ medium action spinning rod spooled with your preferred 6 to 12lb. diameter fishing line will handle most fishing situations. You will want to bring some heavier equipment if you want to tangle with the area’s trophy Pike and large Lake Trout. While live bait still seems to be largely preferred by many, I choose to fish mostly with artificial lures. A small assortment of floating and suspending stick baits such as Rapala’s, in-line spinners such as Blue Fox or Panther Martins and a good assortment of jigs with a variety of plastic baits is all you need. But don’t forget to bring along any favorites such as spinner baits and buzz baits along with any top water lures such as any Pop-r’s, Jitterbugs etc. for explosive top water strikes. Again, the local retailers and camp operators will be able to help with your selection of baits and gear to go after your species of choice. Hiring a local fishing guide for a day is a good idea on several counts, the most of which, if you don’t happen to be a person who has a lot of experience with fishing, a guide will be your best bet for a successful day on the water. Secondly, guides won’t require you to bring your own equipment, so, if you find yourself to be a person who doesn’t or more importantly “isn’t” going to participate in the sport of fishing regularly, you can enjoy a day on the water without owning any fishing equipment at all.Although I must say, after a couple of successful days on the water with the right guide, you’ll probably find yourself going fishing a lot more regularly. So are you interested yet? Check back often as I target specific lakes in the area , telling you how to get there, what’s bite’in and what I’m catch’in ‘em on. Welcome to Almaguin Highlands!
